Weekend Fun: Concerts, Outdoor Movies, Fire Up a Cure and MORE

Your local weekend event list features free outdoor movies and concerts, Shrek! The Musical!, Dueling Pianos and many more.

Are you starting to stare off into space at work? Do you find yourself daydreaming about that magical moment that is 5 p.m. on a Friday? If so, then this is the post for you. 

It's time for the Weekend Planner, Patch's weekly list of the best events going on around the neighborhood this weekend. Browse through the list, pick out one that suits you and enjoy the summer.

Friday

Shrek! The Musical! -  The 99th Street Summer Theater will be performing the Broadway hit this weekend. Tickets are $20, $15 for senior citizens. The theater company is in its 35th season and performances will be held in the auditorium at Mother McAuley High School. Local performers will take the stage on July 25, 26, and 27 at 8 p.m. Find the cast list, musical plot and a link to buy tickets on our events calendar. 

Toy Story on The Green - Oak Lawn hosts their weekly movies on the Village Green with a showing of Toy Story 3. The outdoor event is free and you should bring your own picnic baskets, refreshments, lawn chairs and blankets. The movies start at dusk and are located on the north side of the library, 9427 S. Raymond Ave.  

Saturday

Fire Up a Cure - On Saturday, July 26 Saint Xavier University is hosting the event that pits local firefighters against each other in a series of events, all to raise money for pediatric cancer research and for local children who are battling this illness. The event starts at 11 a.m. and goes to 5 p.m. and is a perfect family day of fun. Events include a fire truck pull, hot wing eating contest, forcible entry door competition, an obstacle course, inflatable jousting, and tug-of-war. There will also be plenty of games and activities for kids, live performances and local food vendors. Find all the details on our calendar. 

The Wonderful World of Puppets - The Evergreen Park Library, 9400 S. Troy Ave, will be hosting a tour of puupets from around the world for children in grades 5 and below. The event takes place on Saturday, Jul7 27 at 2 p.m. Find out how to register here. 

Maggie Speaks Performs The Eagles - The South Side band will be paying tribute to rock legends The Eagles in a one night only concert at the Beverly Arts Center. The two hour concert starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are $17, and $15 for BAC members. 

Dueling Pianos - The Beverly Arts Center will host master showmen Dan Gillogly and Ted Oliver as they perform All American Dueling Pianos, a high energy concert that’s musically superb and hilariously funny. Dueling Pianos is an all request, sing-a-long, clap-a-long, rock 'n' roll, comedy piano show. Tickets are $20, or $18 for BAC members and can be purchased in advance online. 

Sunday


Big Band in the Park - Evergreen Park will play host to the Grand Avenue Big Band in the free concert at Circle Park, 96th and Homan. The show lasts from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and you are welcome to bring your own lawn chairs, blankets and picnic baskets.
