All CPS Schools Now Closed on Monday

After initially planning to remain open, Chicago public schools will now close due to Monday's extreme temperatures.

After initially saying they would stay open on Monday, Chicago Public Schools will now close due to the predicted sub zero temperatures.

Earlier in the day on Sunday, CPS told parents and teachers that they would remain open on Monday, Jan. 6, but that parents wishing to keep their children home were encouraged to do so. A missed day would result in an excused absence.

However, early Sunday evening CPS decided to close for the day.

"The safety and well-being of our students is paramount," said CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett in a news release. "Given, the dangerously cold temperatures and high-winds, it is in the best interest of our students for schools to be closed on Monday."

All sports and other after school activities have also been canceled.

The move came a few hours after Chicago Teachers Union president Karen Lewis issued a statement urging that staying open was a dangerous proposition.

"In light of the forecast, sending children to school in such dangerous weather conditions shouldn't even be an option for parents," Lewis said.

CPS joins most suburban and private schools in closing for the day.

In the news release announcing Monday's closure, CPS noted that all Chicago Park District facilities will be open for parents seeking services.

School will likely resume on Tuesday, but the final determination will be made on Monday.
