State Rep. Fran Hurley's First Passed Bill Targets Sex Offenders Near Play Areas

The passed the State House last week and is now headed to the Senate.

Freshman State Rep. Fran Hurley (35th) had her first bill passed by the House last week.

House Bill 3023 places restrictions on convicted sex offenders from being near privately owned play areas. Currently, law prohibits sex offenders from using public parks or playgrounds.

However, there are no restrictions on sex offenders' proximity to play areas on private property that are publicly accessible.

“The unfortunate reality is that there are dangerous convicted child sex offenders who will continue to use gaps in the law to prey on children,” Hurley said in a prepared statement. “This measure will specifically address an issue that our local law enforcement encounters that threatens our children’s safety in play and recreational areas.”

The bill was passed unanimously by the House, and moves to the Senate where it has been sponsored by local State Sen. Bill Cunningham (18th).
