Watch Smoldering Fire at Mount Hope Cemetery
A brush fire burned at the cemetery off of 111th Street throughout much of Tuesday.
Hours after the initial response was made smoke was still billowing at Mount Hope Cemetery, 11500 S Fairfield Avenue, as firefighters worked to keep a brush fire under control.
The Merrionette Park Fire Department responded to the blaze around 2 a.m. on Tuesday. A small portion is the cemetery was affected and crews were still on the scene throughout much of the day.
The fire was concentrated in the south portion of the cemetery in a fairly wooded area with what appeared to be a large pile of wood and brush still smoking.
A fire department representative was not available to comment.
