McAuley Water Polo Takes 3rd in State

The Mighty Macs finish the 28-5 season with a win over Mundelein

They just kept swimming. The Mother McAuley varsity water polo team grabbed third place in the IHSA state finals Saturday beating the Mundelein Mustangs 11-9. The Mighty Macs ended the season with an overall record of 29-5, Mundelein finished with a 27-8 record. The Macs, coming off an 8-7 loss against St. Ignatius earlier Saturday, never fell behind. Kristen Kleist scored the first goal of the game halfway through the first quarter, but Allie Boothe responded with Mundelein’s first point of the game about a minute later. Kleist and Boothe were both top scorers, with 5 and 6 goals, respectively. Clare Bryar put in three shots for the Macs. Both teams presented strong defenses throughout the game, which had several turnovers and ejections …

Marist Names New Volleyball Coach

The perennially strong program will have a new leader next season.

The Redhawks are getting a new coach.  Marist High School Principal Larry Tucker and Athletic Director Bob Lim announced on Wednesday that Julie Popp Hopkins will take over as the  new Marist women’s varsity volleyball coach. Hopkins will also become a physical education instructor at the school. Hopkins will suceed longtime coach Natalie Holder who resigned at the end of last season.  Hopkins already has a few titles on her resume. She taught and coached at The Latin School in Chicago where her teams won back to back league titles in 2011 and 2012. She was named conference coach of the year in 2012, the school said in a press release. Outside of school, Hopkins works as a club volleyball coach for the Michio Volleyball Club. Hopkins is a …

Marist Tight End Commits to Notre Dame

Nic Weishar, a junior at Marist, has committed to play football for the Fighting Irish.

It's the Irish for Marist football standout Nic Weishar.  The junior tight end orally committed to play at Notre Dame on Tuesday, according to the Chicago Tribune.  Weishar, who stands at 6-foot-5 and weighs 220 pounds, had 23 different football scholarship offers, according to the report.  "I couldn't see myself finding a better fit than Notre Dame," he told the Tribune. "I felt that I was ready to end the process, and my family is also very excited about my decision." Weishar, of Midlothian, was named Patch's Athlete of the Month in October 2012, the same month his brother Andrew, 21, died after a three-year long battle with cancer. “With Nic and his family, they’re the strongest people I’ve ever been around,” Marist coach Pat Dunne said…

After 24 Years, Brother Rice Basketball Coach Pat Richardson Retires

The Brother Rice coaching legend notched 37 championships during his tenure.

It's the end of an era for Crusader basketball.  Brother Rice High School announced on Tuesday that longtime coach Pat Richardson will be retiring at the end of this school year after racking up over 400 wins during his tenure. Richardson has been the head coach of the program for 24 years. During that time his teams have won nine Catholic League titles, eight Thanksgiving, five Christmas, eleven IHSA Regional championships, and four IHSA Sectional Championships as well as making one Elite Eight appearance in 2005, according to the school.   “It’s been an incredible honor and privilege to be the basketball coach at Brother Rice for the past 24 years," Richardson said on the school's website. Free Sox Tickets Available to Members of Fire and Police Departments

The Chicago White Sox are offering a limited number of tickets to select games throughout the season.

For the second year in a row, the Chicago White Sox will be offering each member of the Chicago Fire Department and Chicago Police Department two complimentary tickets to one of 14 games at U.S. Cellular Field this season, it was announced in a press release. Last year the offer was made available to police officers, and the team decided to open it up to firefighters as well. In total, about 20,000 game tickets were given out last year, according to the team. Follow Beverly-Mt.
