Marist High School teacher and alum Don Richardson ’77 is this year’s winner of the Champagnat Award, an honor given to faculty members who demonstrate the example set by St. Marcellin Champagnat in their teaching. Don will also be celebrating his 25 anniversary at Marist next year.

A former Mother McAuley teacher and alumna of the all-girls school shares her thoughts on the need for more acceptance of lesbian, bisexual and questioning students.
Erin Macke is a 2001 graduate of Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School who so valued her time at the school that she decided to return as a teacher in 2009. Two years later her contract was not renewed. In a letter posted to the Huffington Post, she writes that she was not asked to return after the school learned that she was a lesbian and for the way in which "she had counseled an LGBT student who expressed suicidal actions." In the open letter, Macke reflects on the positive educational experience she received at the school. She also expresses disappointment that her personal life leaves her on the outside of the institution she credits as a major force in her life. The Redhawks are getting a new coach. Marist High School Principal Larry Tucker and Athletic Director Bob Lim announced on Wednesday that Julie Popp Hopkins will take over as the new Marist women’s varsity volleyball coach. Hopkins will also become a physical education instructor at the school. Hopkins will suceed longtime coach Natalie Holder who resigned at the end of last season. Hopkins already has a few titles on her resume. She taught and coached at The Latin School in Chicago where her teams won back to back league titles in 2011 and 2012. Saint Xavier University recently raised more than $397,000 for student scholarships at its 28th Annual President’s Scholarship Ball – a new fundraising record for the Ball. More than 430 guests attended the evening of dinner and dancing at the Hilton Chicago. The Ball also celebrated Henry Bros. Company, the 2013 Shield of Saint Xavier recipients. Henry Bros. Company has been among Saint Xavier’s most generous lifetime donors and supporters. It has supported the Scholarship Ball since 1990 and has served as the Dinner Sponsor at the Ball. William Callaghan, Sr. and George P. Henry were the second generation owners of the company from 1966 to 1987. Golden Apple, a leader in advancing the teaching profession in Illinois for 28 years, announced Curt Ehrenstrom, a science teacher at Mount Carmel High School, as a recipient of the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching. The 2013 Golden Apple honorees, all High School teachers, were selected from a pool of 510 nominees from throughout the Chicago metropolitan area. Curt Ehrenstrom, who teaches AP Physics, Honors Physics and coaches the football and water polo teams at Mount Carmel High School in Chicago, was surprised Wednesday in his classroom by CBS2’s Rob Johnson and Golden Apple CEO and President Dominic Belmonte. The new lab at the neighborhood university provides students a hands-on look at real time financial markets.
It might look like a normal neighborhood house from the outside, but once you step inside things get a bit more high-tech. Saint Xavier University's Graham School of Management recently opened the Center for the Study of Financial Markets and Derivatives. The hands-on learning environment gives students the opportunity to use financial technology. "It is very powerful because students can see real-time data coming in," said Dr. Muhammad Chishty, the director of the center. Much of the equipment was made possible through grants. Students can use FactSet and Bloomberg terminals, which gives them real time market information. Eighth graders from all the 19th Ward's elementary schools gathered together to meet their legislators, engage in a debate and meet other neighborhood future leaders.
It was a morning to remember for the eighth graders gathered for breakfast at Morgan Park Academy last Friday. The student council presidents from all the 19th Ward's elementary schools were here to hear from Ald. Matt O'Shea, State Sen. Bill Cunningham and State Rep. Fran Hurley. They talked about the importance of leadership and community. The students engaged in lively debates using real state legislature bills as jumping off points. It was an opportunity to use their public speaking and leadership skills while engaging with peers. "I liked meeting new people and other students," said Rachel Bullock, a student at Keller.
