Former McAuley Teacher Asks For More Acceptance of LGBT Students

A former Mother McAuley teacher and alumna of the all-girls school shares her thoughts on the need for more acceptance of lesbian, bisexual and questioning students.

Erin Macke is a 2001 graduate of Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School who so valued her time at the school that she decided to return as a teacher in 2009. Two years later her contract was not renewed. In a letter posted to the Huffington Post, she writes that she was not asked to return after the school learned that she was a lesbian and for the way in which "she had counseled an LGBT student who expressed suicidal actions." In the open letter, Macke reflects on the positive educational experience she received at the school. She also expresses disappointment that her personal life leaves her on the outside of the institution she credits as a major force in her life. Macke writes:   I left these halls with a strong sense of self, …

Doug, you have got to be kidding me. You really think it has been proven that people can choose not to be homosexual. Please state where I can find these scientific studies. Don't bother, they don't actually exist except for in your delusional brain. Did you have to choose to be heterosexual? I don't think so, it's just how you were naturally born. Well it's the same with being gay. They are born…   more ›

Show Some Love, It's Teacher Appreciation Week

Give a shout-out to a teacher who has made a difference in your or your child's life.

Teachers are pretty awesome. After all, it takes a special kind of person to spend the majority of their waking week, often in vain attempt to civilize our respective little hellions. And while teachers may be the backbone of modern human civilization's perpetuation, the job is frequently a thankless one.  In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, we want to spread some love to the teachers, past and present, who've made a mark on our lives. But we need your help. If you've ever had a teacher in the past or present who has inspired you, taught you something invaluable or has just been plain awesome, give them a shout-out down below.  Thank you teachers for all you do.

New Financial Lab Opens at Saint Xavier

The new lab at the neighborhood university provides students a hands-on look at real time financial markets.

It might look like a normal neighborhood house from the outside, but once you step inside things get a bit more high-tech.  Saint Xavier University's Graham School of Management recently opened the Center for the Study of Financial Markets and Derivatives. The hands-on learning environment gives students the opportunity to use financial technology.  "It is very powerful because students can see real-time data coming in," said Dr. Muhammad Chishty, the director of the center.  Much of the equipment was made possible through grants. Students can use FactSet and Bloomberg terminals, which gives them real time market information. Currently, the only other area schools that use FactSet are the University of Chicago and Northwestern University, …

It was a morning to remember for the eighth graders gathered for breakfast at Morgan Park Academy last Friday.  The student council presidents from all the 19th Ward's elementary schools were here to hear from Ald. Matt O'Shea, State Sen. Bill Cunningham and State Rep. Fran Hurley. They talked about the importance of leadership and community.  The students engaged in lively debates using real state legislature bills as jumping off points. It was an opportunity to use their public speaking and leadership skills while engaging with peers.  "I liked meeting new people and other students," said Rachel Bullock, a student at Keller.
