Red-Light Camera Audit: CDOT Can't Substantiate Claims, Lacks 'Basic Record Keeping'

The Inspector General released an audit Tuesday of the city's red-light camera system. It says evidence doesn't support officials' claims that cameras monitor crash-prone intersections. It also breaks down tickets issued at each intersection.

By Carrie Frillman The results of a red-light camera system audit cannot prove true what the city says were the devices' original purpose—to increase safety at intersections with high crash rates, according to the Chicago Inspector General's Office. The audit was requested in February because of questions posed by several alderman. They wanted proof, they said, that the Australian company, Redflex Traffic Systems Inc., and Chicago installed the devices to improve traffic safety rather than to create a source of revenue. But the IG's office found that the Chicago Department of Transportation was "unable to substantiate its claims that the city chose to install the red-light cameras at intersections with the highest angle crash rates in …

Should DUI Alcohol Limit Be Lowered To 0.05 Percent?

The National Transportation Safety Board recommends reducing the limit. Some say it would save lives. Others say it's unreasonable.

By David Mills One drink could be the standard for drunken driving – at least for some people if the National Transporation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. What do you think? Is the proposal reasonable? About 10,000 deaths a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. Officials at the American Beverage Institute called the proposal "ludicrous." It said the average woman could reach the 0.05 percent limit by having one drink. In 2011, 323 people were killed by alcohol-related crashed in Illinois, which makes up 35 percent of the 918 total crash …

Court Supervision: Former Fire Chief Has Constant Case of the Blues

The former Chicago Ridge deputy fire chief charged with trying to rape and kill a neighbor is tired of the cops always showing up at his parents' place.

When they let former Chicago Ridge Deputy Fire Chief Gary Swiercz out of jail, he wasn't allowed to return to the Tinley Park condo where he allegedly tried to rape and kill a neighbor. Since the woman still lives in his building, Swiercz moved into his parents' home in Worth. But that hasn't worked out so well. The high-priority electronic monitoring the county put Swiercz on requires the cops to make an in-person visit to the house once during each eight hour shift, and the repeated visits are wearing on Swiercz's elderly parents, Barbara and Stan. Swiercz's parents were they went to court and asked a judge to cut out the house checks between midnight and 8 a.m. Cook County Judge John Joseph Hynes denied the request, pointing out that …
