Marist Updates Time Capsule Left in School Wall 50 Years Ago

Marist High School concludes 50th anniversary celebrations by updating a time capsule hidden in wall by school's first principal in 1963.

Marist High School reached back and touched time by updating a time capsule that was placed inside an office wall when the the school first opened 50 years ago.

The high school’s president, Br. Patrick McNamara, unearthed the time capsule from 1963 and added contemporary Marist items from the 21st century before burying the box again, capping off Marist’s 50th anniversary year.

On Dec. 10, 1963, the first principal of the then all-boys Marist High School, Br. Pius Lyons, placed a copper box inside an office wall at the brand new school that opened in the fall of that year.

During the 2013-14 school year, the box was removed. The contents from 1963 included a list of the class and faculty, an official overview of the school written by the Marist brothers, and a copy of Sun-Times.

Less than a month after President John F. Kennedy's assassination, the Sun-Times front page included stories on the closing of the South Bend, IN, Studebaker plant and the kidnapping of entertainer Frank Sinatra's son.

Br. Patrick McNamara, Marist’s outgoing president, placed memorabilia from the 50th year anniversary celebrations, an academic course offering book, copies of the school newspaper and other current Marist items. Just like in 1963, a list of students and faculty and a copy of the Sun-Times were also included.

Then, the capsule was placed safely back inside the wall, to be revisited on the school’s 100th anniversary.
