Watch Unsafe Morgan Park House Get Kocked Down

An unsafe home is torn down in Morgan Park.

Wrecking crews made quick work of a Morgan Park home Tuesday morning that for years has been a blight on the block.

The house, located at 10921 S. Hermosa, featured an illegal partially completed addition on top of its already questionable stucco structure. It had been uninhabited for years before it made its way through the legal system and received an order for demolition.

The system for clearing abandoned, unsafe homes in Chicago is a long one. Legal proceedings and inspections have to take place before a structure can be torn down. It also has to be declared structurally unsound by a building inspector.

Ald. Matt O'Shea says there are about 15 homes in the 19th Ward that his office is working to bring down. Some of these homes end up being used for drug activity, or might simply be a blight on an otherwise well-kept block.

O'Shea says that residents should let his office know about abandoned,  dangerous homes in the ward.

This particular house was identified by O'Shea as a problem before he even took office over two years ago.
