Watch Morgan Park Problem House Get Torn Down

Two vacant homes on Church Street were torn down on Friday morning.

Neighbors have been complaining for years about two homes on Church Street and the problems they bring to the block.

Abandoned for years the houses at 11302 and 11402 Church Street have been havens for drinking and drug activities. Today they come down.

"Residents have put up with it for far too long," said Ald. Matt O'Shea moments before the first of the two houses was torn down.

The process for bringing vacant and problem homes down is a long one and the 19th Ward Office has to stay persistent with the necessary city departments and court proceedings that allow for the houses to come down, said chief of staff Marty Joyce. It could take years to get the necessary approval.

Drug paraphernalia and empty beer bottles have been frequently found at these bank-owned homes.

Back in June O'Shea and staff had a structurally unsafe home at 10921 S. Hermosa torn down and there are several other properties on the cusp of action.

O'Shea says he is dedicated to pushing for these demolitions as a way to guarantee entire blocks don't get dragged down by a single problem structure.
