House Passes Bill to Rename Post Office After Fallen Firefighter

The measure would change the Mt. Greenwood facility's name to the Captain Herbert Johnson Memorial Post Office.

The Mount Greenwood Post Office moved one step closer to getting a name change Monday after the State House of Representatives passed a bill to rename the building after a Chicago firefighter who died in the line of duty.

The bill, which was sponsored last fall by Rep. Dan Lipinski, would rename the facility at 3349 W. 11th St., the Captain Herbert Johnson Memorial Post Office Building. Johnson died in the line of duty in 2012, while battling a fire in the Englewood neighborhood. He was 54 and had served with the department for more than 32 years.

“This post office naming will insure that Capt. Herbie Johnson, his family, and the sacrifices of all first responders will always be remembered and appreciated, and will hopefully serve as a powerful source of inspiration in the community,” Lipinski stated in a press release.

The bill now moves on to the Senate for a vote.
