Does the 19th Ward Need a Dog Park?

The Chicago City Council has recently been debating the roadblocks associated with building dog parks, none of which are located near Beverly, Mt. Greenwood or Morgan Park.

At a Tuesday committee meeting a few members of the Chicago City Council urged the Chicago Park District to rethink its approach to dog parks with the hope of increasing the number around the city.

The Chicago Sun-Times details the Committee on Special Events, Cultural Affairs and Recreation which included an interesting discussion on the high cost to build dog parks in the city -- over $900,000 in the most recent case. Currently, the Park District requires all dog parks to be built using artificial turf.

Several alderman urged park officials to reconsider this stance. Park district officials said that there is limited money to go around, and children's programming often takes priority over funding new dog parks.

All of this dog talk got me thinking about our own neighborhood. Currently there are 22 dog parks located throughout the city, none of which are in the 19th Ward or even close to it.

The majority are concentrated just north of the Loop and along the lakefront

Chicago dog parks are maintained by groups of residents organized around each park and fundraising is often done at the local level.

Would you like to see a dog park in the neighborhood? If so, where?
