19th Ward Still Thawing Out, Cleaning Up

The latest on plowing and clean-up efforts in Beverly, Mt. Greenwood and Morgan Park.

A heavy snowfall followed by record-breaking low temperatures resulted in messy streets, closed schools and delayed garbage pick-up across Chicago.

Here in the 19th Ward crews are still out plowing the streets and Streets and Sanitation workers have resumed garbage collection Tuesday morning, according to Ald. Matt O'Shea.

"They have been able to keep the main streets clear and dealt with some snow drifting issues near the Ag School and Mt. Greenwood Park," O'Shea said Tuesday morning.

He added that plows will continue to focus on clearing off side streets today.

No major power outages were reported in the ward, a concern when dealing with large snowfalls and very low temperatures.

O'Shea says that waste collection crews will do their best in today's freezing temperatures to resume service and hit as many blocks as possible.

The 19th Ward Office was open yesterday and remains open today for residents with weather-related concerns. You can also call 311 to request well-being checks for neighbors.

Chicago Public Schools are set to reopen tomorrow as temperatures begin to climb above freezing this afternoon.
