Two Weeks Left to Apply to Become a Chicago Police Officer

The opportunity to apply to be a Chicago police officer comes only every five years.

The Chicago Police Department has set Sept. 16 as the final date that they will be accepting applications for new officers. The application process takes place every five years. 

You can apply online by visiting the department's recruiting site. 

Application requirements are as follows: 

  • Age: 18 years or older
  • Education/Military Service: 60 semester hours or 36 months of continuous active duty or one year continuous service and 30 semester hours. This is required at the time of hire, not application. 
  • A valid State of Illinois Driver’s License is required at the time of hire. 
  • Payment of application fee of $30, a  fee waiver for available for qualifying individuals.
  • Residency in the City of Chicago is required at time of employment. 
The application process includes a POWER test which tests strength, endurance, and flexibility, a background investigation, polygraph, psychological test, medical examination and drug screening.

The department has graduated 512 new officers in 2013 so far.
