Man Who Reported Public Indecency Tells His Story

The man who called police on Daniel Vorberg, who was charged with public indecency after he was reported to have masturbated in his car near a Mount Greenwood school, speaks out about the incident.

The man who is the witness to a recent Mt. Greenwood crime wants to make sure people understand exactly what happened.

He says that he and his fiance are the two witnesses to the alleged crimes of Daniel Vorberg, 30, the Oak Lawn man they say was masturbating in a car on the 11200 block of S. Spaulding Ave. just down the street from Cassell School in Mount Greenwood.

On April 30, around 4 p.m., his fiance saw a car parked on the street on the side of their home, something seemed off. In front of the house around their porch was a group of about six kids, between six and nine years of age, he said.

From their home his fiance says she saw Vorberg allegedly masturbating while pointing his phone at the group of children, he said. She called out and the man went outside to approach the car which quickly drove away. He was able to snap a clear picture of the vehicle.

He says she then called police, who immediately responded.

In a sign of the highly connected times, he shared one of the photos he took with a neighbor so she could post it to local parent Facebook groups. He wanted to make sure the community knew what was going on, and to be on the lookout for the man he says committed a crime.

The photo spread quickly among neighborhood pages and information was added to the narrative that wasn't accurate, he said. He's disappointed the posts ended with his neighbor being banned from a few groups.

It is an example of how quickly information can spread, and the inherent uncertainty and rush for information that often accompanies local news on social media.

In the days since the incident, the man who witnessed it says he has spoken with detectives and the states attorney's office at least three or four times. On Tuesday the forensic unit extracted the two photos from his phone with the time stamp of when they were taken, he said.

He also identified Vorberg for police in both a photo and physical line up.

He believes the photos, combined with the testimony of two adult eyewitnesses makes for a strong case and he plans to be there every step of the way.

"We are going to do everything we can to make sure that he doesn't get away with it," he said.

He's alluding to the fact that in October 2009 Vorberg was charged with three felony counts of child abduction and disorderly conduct when he he allegedly attempted to lure three 11-year-old girls into his SUV. A first trial ended in a hung jury and a second with an acquittal.

The witness, who moved to Mt. Greenwood a little over a year ago, wanted to tell Patch his story so that "there will be no speculation" on what exactly happened. He wants his neighbors to be aware, and to be active in the process.

Vorberg is expected to appear in court on May 23. He is currently on electronic monitoring.
