Funeral at St. Christina For Man Killed By Metra Train Near Mokena

Lester P. Farrelly Jr., 25, died of multiple injuries, according to a Will County Coroner's office report.

Visitation for Lester P. Farrelly, Jr., 25, is from 3 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, April 4 at Vandenberg Funeral Home, 19604 S. Wolf Road, Mokena. Prayers at the funeral home are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. April 5.  

The funeral is scheduled for Friday, April 5 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Christina Catholic Church, 111th and Homan. Burial will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 6001 W. 111th St., in Alsip.

No one else was on or near the Rock Island line tracks when a 25-year-old New Lenox man was struck and killed Monday morning, according to a Metra police report.

, according to an autopsy by the Will County Coroner's office. A final cause of death will be released pending the results of autopsy, toxicology and police reports.

The 402 train had departed the New Lenox station was headed to Mokena when it started pulling into a curve on the tracks just before 6 a.m., said Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile. According to the report, the engineer thought a deer was standing still along the track and applied the brakes when he realized it was a person.

Farrelly appears to have been alone when he was struck. Reile said police found no evidence of anyone with him that morning.

No Metra employees, other than the engineer, witnessed the crash, Reile said.

New Lenox and Will County police were the first to arrive, Reile said. Farrelly was struck about half-mile east of Schoolhouse Road.

He was pronounced dead at 7:13 a.m.

The Rock Island 402 had departed Joliet at 5:29 a.m. Monday and was headed into Chicago.
