City Cops Continue 'Aggressive Anti-Violence Efforts'

Officials from the Chicago Police Department updated the total number of guns seized within the city's limits this week. The initiative is part of an aggressive approach to anti-violence, they said.

Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy updated the number of seized firearms in the city this week to 1,999.

That total includes all illegal weapons that have been taken by police in the first 15 weeks of 2013. The effort is one aimed at reducing violence by targeting "the source of the problem," police said.

“It is encouraging to see a drop in the number of murders, shootings and overall crime in the City as a result of targeted initiatives, perseverance, and collaborative relationships with community leaders, aldermen, clergy and residents,” McCarthy said in a statement. “The reality of firearms still confronts officers and our communities far too often, and we need stronger laws to keep illegal guns off our streets, and to punish the dangerous criminals carrying them.”
