Chicago Police Officer Killed in Crash Following Dan Ryan Chase

The chase began in south suburban Calumet Park early Friday morning.

A police chase on the Dan Ryan Expressway that began in south suburban Calumet Park ended in a crash on the South Side that claimed an off-duty Chicago Police officer's life.

The police officer, identified as David L. Harris, was driving a black Lexus that was struck by a white van that sped away from a Calumet Park traffic stop at about 1 a.m. Friday. The van crashed into the Lexus after leaving the expressway at 87th Street.

The van was clocked at speeds over 100 mph. A man and woman in the van were taken into custody.

DNAInfo.com reports that the 42-year-old CPD officer is from the Scottsdale neighborhood. WGN reports that Harris a 10-year veteran of the department. He was on his way home after finishing his shift as part of a saturation unit sent into high-crime areas.

"It was devastating. Not only with regards of the sudden loss of someone you really like, but for his family," a neighbor, C.W. Harris, told DNAInfo.com on Friday. "He was a real good guy. A family man. He took care of his wife and children."
