Another Firefighter Dies In Line of Duty

Less than a week after the funeral for CFD Capt. Herbie Johnson, another Chicago firefighter from Beverly has died in the line of duty.

Firefighter Walter Patmon Jr, 61, suffered a heart attack after responding to a small kitchen fire on Sunday evening.

According to Chicago Breaking News, Patmon experienced shortness of breath after returning to his firehouse in the 1700 block of West 95^th Street. He was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park where he was pronounced dead at 11:21 p.m.

Patmon was an 18-year veteran of the Chicago Fire Department. Known by his childhood nickname of “Bubble,” he was just a few years shy of retirement, ABC News-Ch. 7 reported.

Patmon is a resident of the Burnside neighborhood. Early Monday morning, firefighters draped purple mourning bunting over the garage doors of the Beverly firehouse.

The veteran Chicago firefighter leaves a wife and three grown daughters. Ch. 7 News reported that Patmon is to be buried with the same honors reserved for city firefighters that die in the line of duty.

He was recalled by colleagues as a father-type figure who was a mentor to younger firefighters.
