4 Men Now Charged In Back of the Yards Shooting That Left 13 Injured

More charges have been filed in last week's shooting that left 13 injured. Two of those charged today are believed by police to be the shooters.

A day after charges were filed against two men for their role in a shooting in Back of the Yards that left 13 people wounded, police announced Tuesday morning that two additional men who they believe to have been the shooters have also been charged.

The men charged include two participants, including the man who provided the "military-grade" weapons, and two men believed to be shooters, police said.

All four men were charged with three counts of attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm. They are:

  • Tabari Young, 22,  who police say fired the military-grade weapon into the crowd. His record includes more than a dozen arrests.
  • Bryon Champ, 21, who also fired a gun during the shooting, police said.
  • Kewane Gatewood, 20, who  according to police supplied the weapon used.
  • Brad Jett, 22, who participated as a lookout during the shooting, police report. He is a convicted felon.

Police say that Champ is a convicted felon and documented gang member who was previously convicted in July 2012 of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and was was sentenced to boot camp at the Cook County Department of Corrections.

“Not only do we believe a military-grade weapon was used in this shooting, but one of the offenders charged last night was convicted of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon/Possession of a firearm by a Felon a little more than a year ago,” said Superintendent McCarthy in a statement. “He received boot camp for that gun crime and was back out on the streets to be a part of this senseless shooting. That is unacceptable. To truly address violence for the long-term we need state and federal laws that keep illegal guns out of our communities and provide real punishment for the criminals who use them.”
