One art project at a time ...

The generous seniors that attend the arts and craft class at the Oak Lawn senior center spend their time making things to make others happy.

During the last art class the seniors learned how to braid bracelets. If you don’t know how to braid bracelets, no worries, Mary Kos the class director and Chris Marzek the class assistant will be more than happy to assist and teach you all the techniques. Mary and Chris meet a few times a week in order to plan and coordinate the class activities. They are dedicated to keeping the seniors busy while making others happy. The braided bracelets have been donated to the Advocate Hope Children’s Hospital. At his hospital, many children receive treatment for various types of cancer. The class has previously made hats and various other items for the children but this time they decided to make something that the boys would enjoy. The bracelets allow the children to become more social with one another, they even enjoy trading them.

During each class a different item is created and is then donated. During the June class they created seat belt covers for cancer patients. The seat belt cover allows a barrier between the actual seat belt and the patients port which is how they receive treatment. The seat belt cover makes driving and wearing a seat belt a lot more comfortable.
