Retired Police Sergeant, Marine Vet Dies at 82

Death Notice: James Dolan of St. Christina Parish

A retired Chicago police officer and veteran of the Marine Corps who served in the Korean War has died. 

James R. Dolan, Sr., 82, died on Jan. 17. 

Mr. Dolan retired from the Chicago Police Department as a sergeant in 1992 after joining the force in 1958. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and served during the Korean War. 

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Helen (nee Kolegas) and children Jeanne (Mark CPD) Grohovena, Jim Jr. (Anne), Janet (Dolly), Martin, Mary (Dave) Howicz and Christine Atkins. 


Mr. Dolan was grandather to James III (Lauren) Dolan, Emily (Brian) Whalen, Andrew, Nicholas, Sean Dolan, Garret and Elena Howicz, John Robert Atkins and great grandfather of Eleanor, James Robert Dolan IV and Luke Whalen. 

Dear brother of Peggy (Phil) Graham, Maureen (Mike) Lavin, Martin (Kim) Dolan, Michael (Kathleen) Dolan, Nancy Dolan and the late Mary Jeanne (Jim) Salach and a devoted uncle to 40 nieces and nephews. 

He was a 1949 graduate of St. Leo High School and founding and lifetime member of "Boneheads S.A.C."

Visitation was held on Monday and a funeral Mass is set for Tuesday at St. Christina Church at 9:30am from Andrew J. McGann & Son Funeral Home, 10727 S. Pulaski Rd. at 8:45 a.m. Interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
