Christine Ohs Brustmaker Recalled as 'Amazing Woman'

Christine Ohs Brustmaker grew up in Oak Lawn, attended Richards High School. Funeral set for June 12.


Chris Brustmaker passed away suddenly at her childhood home on June 2. She was 65.

She was born Christine Wendy Ohs on March 16, 1949 in Chicago, the only child of Robert and Valerie Ohs. She grew up into an amazing woman, wife, friend and volunteer.

Ms. Brustmaker was raised in Oak Lawn “on the prairie” before the urban sprawl. She graduated from Richards High School with a love of math. Ms. Brustmaker took classes as Wesleyan University before taking on a job as money manager for Goldblatts’ main store in Chicago.

She went on to work for the U.S. Census Bureau and eventually retired from DHS as an income recovery supervisor.

She loved bowling, fishing, birdwatching with the “hummers,” gardening, the Internet game “Mafia Wars,” her card playing buddies and Baker’s Square friends. With her passion for cooking, Ms. Brustmaker had amassed 3,000 cookbooks.

Ms. Brustmaker was the past treasurer of the Wilmington Garden Club, second vice-president of the Will County Homemakers Club, and a 21-year member of the Moose.

Ms. Brustmaker was preceded in death by her father, Robert Ohs. Ms. Brustmaker is survived by her mother, Valerie; her husband of 23 years, Nickell Brustmaker; cousins Janet (Richard) Genc, of McHenry; Barbara (Steve) Horan, of Romeoville; stepdaughter, Tracy (Mike) Spangler, of Bettendorf, IA; and sister-in-law Penny Pershey, of Portland, OR.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew her, and is now in the hands of God.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of service at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, June 12, at Chapel Hill Gardens South, 11333 S. Central Ave., in Oak Lawn.
