Two Women. Two Stories. One Night.

Chicago-based performers Medina Perine and Penelope Walker will be performing their one-woman shows "Hair Crownicles" and "Sugar Funk" at Governors State University Center for Performing Arts for one night only on Friday, February 7 at 7:30 p.m. as part of our One More Night Series.

Explore what it means to be a woman on a quest for balance and acceptance in the hilarious and poignant, "Hair Crownicles" and "Sugar Funk." This no holds barred journey blends house music, dance, and humor to deliver a message of empowerment that all women can relate to. Join Medina Perine on her personal quest to come to terms with her hair amidst peer pressure and social expectations. Then watch Penelope Walker dance her way through life with diabetes and a whole lot of humor, finding a sense of balance through family, fitness, and spirituality.

In addition to this performance, join us three nights earlier on Tuesday, February 4th for the accompanying lecture "Hair, Health, and Heritage in the 21st Century" (see details below).

Penelope Walker is a Chicago-based actress who has appeared in several shows at the Steppenwolf and the Goodman, including multiple returns in the annual "A Christmas Carol."

Medina Perine is a New Orleans native who is active in Chicago theatre, appearing in ETA, Gorilla Tango Theater, DuSable Museum, and MPAACT Theater Company productions.

Only 200 audience members will be seated onstage with the performers for this unique and intimate performance. All seats are general admission.

Tickets are $25. Seniors (65+) pay $20. Students pay $10. Discounts are not available online.

The box office is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and two hours prior to performances. Groups of 10 or more are eligible for discounts at GSU Center. Patrons who select three 2013-2014 shows are eligible for 15 percent discounts. Patrons who select four or more shows are eligible for 20 percent discounts. (Savings are not available online).

"Hair, Health, and Heritage in the 21st Century"

This lecture will take place on Tuesday, February 4th at 7:30 p.m. in conjunction with "Hair Crownicles" and "Sugar Funk" as part of our One More Night Pre-Performance Series.

"Hair, Health, and Heritage" is a discussion on black hair and body aesthetics and how they impact women's sense of self.

Panelists include:

Dr. Elizabeth Johnson - GSU Assistant Professor, moderator, and author of "Resistance and Empowerment in Black Women's Hair Styling"

Phyllis West - GSU Assistant Professor

Tammara Winn - GSU Lecturer
