Business Comings & Goings: Tenth Planet 'Beamed Up' in New Digs

Rusty Nail owner opens new place in Palos Hills, cupcake kiosk debuts at Chicago Ridge Mall, Mangoe Pizza opens in Alsip, entrepreneur conference coming to Tinley Park and more local business news.

The Tenth Planet comic book store moved Feb. 1 into new digs at 9736 Southwest Highway in Oak Lawn.

“We moved for economic reasons,” said co-owner Paul Figura. “The space is a little smaller but the rent is better.”

Figura said that despite the move to smaller quarters, he and his partner, Dan Matteson, would like to open a couple of more stores.

“They’d have to be in areas that don’t already have a comic book store,” he said. “People in this business tend to be very territorial.”

Fugura and Matteson each oversee a different part of the business, which was founded in Oak Lawn in 1990 and that they have owned since 2006.

“I take care of the comics while Dan oversees the games part of the business,” Figura said.

The store has two employees and sells comic books, paperbacks, graphic novels, magazines, T-shirts and games.

Figura said the new store is about 1,100 square feet.

The shop is open from noon to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Rusty Nail owner adds Philly T’s

The Chrysanthou family has spread its wings after years of success at the Rusty Nail Lounge in Oak Lawn and will hold a grand opening at 6 p.m. Friday for the family’s latest venture, Philly T’s at 9750 S. Roberts Road in Palos Hills in the former Village Pub.

“The owners decided to name it Philly T’s because that’s what it was originally and that’s what people still call it,” said manager Susan DeLorenzo. “It’s the same as people still calling Sears Tower Sears Tower even though it has a new name.”

The pub opened in mid-January for a shakedown cruise, said DeLorenzo.

“We have a short, pub grub menu,” said DeLorenzo. “We’re really known for our wings.”

The place is open daily from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. and serves lunch and dinner and offers nightly karaoke.

“Karaoke starts at 10 p.m. during the week and at 9 p.m. on weekends,” said DeLorenzo.

“The owner, Louie Chrysanthou, is here every day,” she said.
