Police Shoot Man In CVS Parking Lot

The latest on Thursday afternoon's shooting in Mt. Greenwood.

8:45 p.m. - The Chicago Police Department has issued their account of the events that transpired Thursday afternoon.

Around 1 p.m. officers from the 22nd District received a call that an armed man was suicidal in the 10300 block of S. Pulaski Avenue, according to a Chicago Police Department news release.

When officers arrived to the parking lot of CVS they saw a man sitting in his car who "appeared to be highly agitated," police said.

After several minutes of trying to persuade the man to get out of his car the man abruptly exited the car and began to run toward one of the officers, police said.

It was at this time that the man took what police called a shooting stance and pointed what is being described as a dark pointed object at an officer.

Police say that the man's actions led the officers to fear for their lives at which time they discharged their weapons and shot the man.

He was transported to Christ Hospital in critical condition where he is currently being treated. Police say that no officers were hurt during the incident.

The scene is fairly quiet as about a dozen officers are standing in front of CVS. Police tape is wrapped around the entire parking lot and 103rd Street remains closed east of Pulaski Road.

The Chicago Tribune, quoting Patrick Camden of the Fraternal Order of Police, reports that a firefighter was shot by police after he made a gesture to indicate he had a weapon. The object turned out to be his wallet.

The Tribune reports that police were called by the man's wife because she was concerned about his safety and believed that he had a gun.
