SXU Hosts Fall Concert Series

Saint Xavier University showcases jazz, classical and tuba music in its fall concert series.

The Saint Xavier University Music Department has lined up a stellar concert series ranging from tubas and jazz to Vivaldi and wind ensembles. Also included is a Christmas Festival Concert.

All performances are free for SXU students, faculty and staff with a current school ID and for prospective students. General admission is $6; $5 for seniors, visiting students, and members of the military.

Unless otherwise noted, all performances will be held at SXU's Chicago campus, located at 3700 W. 103rd St.

Singing Excellence! - High School SATB Choral Workshop

9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m., Fri., Oct. 25, Performance Space in the Warde Academic Center

Junior/senior-level high school singers will participate in a full-day choral workshop designed to establish healthy singing habits and improve vocal technique while working on exciting choral music. The day will culminate in a brief concert, followed by a reception. The concert is open to the public. To register singers, contact Jan Bickel at (773) 298-3425 or bickel@sxu.edu.

Jazz Night at Gilhooley’s (free admission)

8 to 10 p.m., Friday, Oct. 25 and Fri., Nov. 1, Gilhooley’s Grande Saloon, 3901 W. 103rd St.

The SXU Jazz Combo and Jazz Ensemble return for another exciting evening of small group and big band jazz. Admission is free for all. Relax and enjoy the music, along with food and drink, while showing your support for SXU’s jazz groups as they continue this fun new tradition. Shawn Salmon, Director.

 

OkTUBAfest

7:30 p.m., Sun., Oct. 27, McGuire Hall in the Warde Academic Center

A day of bratwurst and workshops culminates in a recital of high school and community trombone, euphonium, and tuba players performing everything from polka to pops. Open to all middle school, high school and community trombone, euphonium and tuba players, free of charge! Warm-up/rehearsals are at 1:30 p.m. in the Performance Space, the bratwurst dinner is at 6 p.m., and the concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in McGuire Hall. Symphony Orchestra - Tchaikovsky’s "Sleeping Beauty"

7:30 p.m., Thurs., Nov. 14, Performance Space in the Warde Academic Center

Featuring ballet music by Shostakovich, Schubert and Gluck, as well as Tchaikovsky’s epic score featured in the animated Disney classic. Jeff Malecki, Director.

 

Guitar Ensemble & Jazz Combo

7:30 p.m., Fri., Nov. 15, McGuire Hall in the Warde Academic Center

The SXU Guitar Ensemble will perform literature for multiple guitars spanning early period music from the Renaissance and Baroque eras to works by modern composers. The SXU Jazz Combo will present interpretations of jazz standards ranging from Swing era classics to modern jazz compositions. Shawn Salmon, Director.

 

A Vivaldi Choral Celebration

7:30 p.m., Sat., Nov. 16, McDonough Chapel

The University Chorale, accompanied by the Chamber Ensemble, will present Antonio Vivaldi’s "Gloria" and "Magnificat" with soloists. Features Jan Bickel as conductor/director and Monica Kropidlowski on keyboard. Accompanied by string quartet and harpsichord.

 

Wind Ensemble

8 p.m., Wed., Nov. 20, Boutell Memorial Concert Hall at Northern Illinois University, 300 Lucinda Ave., DeKalb, 60115

SXU and NIU together in concert! Join two excellent college bands in a shared concert, including a Sousa finale.

 

Flute Choir

7:30 p.m., Fri., Nov. 22, McDonough Chapel

From piccolo to bass flute and everything in between, join us for an evening of flute ensemble music. Irene Claude, Director.

 

Jazz Ensemble

7:30 p.m., Fri., Dec. 6, McGuire Hall in the Warde Academic Center

The SXU Jazz Ensemble will perform a wide variety of big band literature including standards from the Count Basie Band and Duke Ellington Orchestra, Bebop era classics by Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, and others, and big band interpretations of Latin, funk and rock/jazz fusion favorites. Symphony Orchestra and SXU Southside Community Band - A Christmas Festival

7:30 p.m., Sat., Dec. 7, Performance Space in the Warde Academic Center

An eclectic evening of familiar classics and holiday favorites, including Leroy Anderson’s title piece "A Christmas Festival." Jeff Malecki, Director.

 

SXU High School Honor Band Weekend

Sat., Jan. 18 and Sun., Jan. 19, 2014

Contact Jeff Malecki or your local high school director for more details about the exciting two-day event, open to talented area high school musicians. In its third year, the 80-plus member ensemble will play a mix of band masterworks, captivating new pieces and crowd favorites! Dates are subject to change.
