St. Xavier University Announces Spring Concert Schedule

Choose your favorites and mark your calendars.

Saint Xavier University’s Department of Music will host a series of concerts during the spring 2013 semester.

Performances will be held in McGuire Hall (located in the Warde Academic Center), McDonough Chapel, or the Performance Space (located at the northwest entrance of the Warde Academic Center on the second floor), all of which are located at SXU's Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St.

All performances are free for SXU students, faculty, and staff with a current ID, and for prospective students. Unless otherwise noted, general admission is $6, and admission for senior citizens, visiting students, and members of the military is $5.

The Department of Music also will host Vocal Seminars at McGuire Hall. The Seminars are free and open to voice teachers, students and anyone with interest. Seminars include:

  • "Master Class for Classical Undergraduate Singers" with Master Teacher/Soprano Carol Shamory, Soprano, MM, and accompanist Monica Kropidlowski – 12:30 to 2 p.m., Tues., March 20.

Jazz Ensemble with special guest Bob Lark

7:30 p.m., Fri., Feb. 28, McGuire Hall

The Jazz Ensemble will perform original compositions by award-winning trumpeter Bob Lark, which were recorded by The Bob Lark Alumni Big Band on the critically acclaimed album "Reunion."

 

Southside Community Band and Wind Ensemble – "Postcards"

7:30 p.m., Tues., March 4, Performance Space

The SXU bands play music from around the world, including the premier of "Postcards" from Africa and Asia by David Avshalamov and other musical postcards from England, America and the mystical Illyria!

 

Symphony Orchestra – "The Firebird"

7:30 p.m., Thurs., March 6, Performance Space

A concert of symphonic masterpieces featuring music from Stravinsky's monumental ballet "The Firebird" and Beethoven's Symphony No. 8, as well as chamber music gems.

 

Jazz Combo

7:30 p.m., Fri., March 21, McGuire Hall

Join the SXU Jazz Combo for an evening of intimate jazz, including works from some of jazz's greatest stars including Duke Ellington, Horace Silver and others.

 

Alumna Recital

3 p.m., Sun., March 30, McGuire Hall

Features soprano Michelle Gliottoni-Rodriguez and accompanist Monica Kropidlowski.

 

Flute Choir

7:30 p.m., Fri., April 4, McDonough Chapel

Join the Flute Choir in an evening of music including: Zayt Lustik, an arrangement by Klezmer ¬ flutist Adrianne Greenbaum; an arrangement of Gaubert's enthralling Madrigal; an arrangement of a Haydn London Trio; and Wil Offerman's "Bamburia."

 

Faculty Recital

7:30 p.m., Sat., April 5, McGuire Hall

Featuring flutist Irene Claude.

 

"El Capitan" - Operetta in Three Acts

7:30 p.m., Fri., April 11 and Sat., April 12, McGuire Hall

This Opera Workshop production presents the famous operetta by John Philip Sousa. General admission is $10 and is $8 for seniors and military.

 

Guitar Ensemble and Jazz Combo

7:30 p.m., Fri., April 25, McGuire Hall

The SXU Guitar Ensemble’s final concert of the spring semester will feature classical works from early-Baroque to modern day composers, debut original works and open with a final performance from the SXU Jazz Combo.

 

Southside Community Band and Symphony Orchestra – "Of Stage and Screen"

7:30 p.m., Thurs., May 1, Performance Space

A diverse mix of concert pops, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Mary Poppins, favorites from Broadway past and present and some radio hits.

 

Jazz Ensemble

7:30 p.m., Fri., May 2, McGuire Hall

The Jazz Ensemble’s final concert of the spring semester will feature classic compositions from the great big bands of jazz and will include a special farewell to the graduating seniors of the ensemble.

 

Wind Ensemble and Percussion Ensemble – "Boom Crash STOMP"

7:30 p.m., Sat., May 3, Performance Space

After a rousing performance by SXU’s Percussion Ensemble led by Brett Baxter, the Wind Ensemble will play exciting new pieces to close out the concert season, including "Stomp" by composer David Biedenbender.

 

Piano Showcase

7:30 p.m., Sun., May 4, McGuire Hall

Featuring director Patricia Lee. Free admission for all.
