City Needs Your Help to Clear Sidewalks and Fire Hydrants

Plows focusing on main Chicago streets during "extreme weather" period. Sidestreets and sidewalks still covered in snow in many places.

The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation says its plows are focusing on main streets while the snow falls, so many sidestreets are still not cleared Thursday afternoon.

“As long as it’s snowing, we stay on the main streets so that emergency vehicles have a safe passage through the city along with residents,” said Commissioner Charles Williams at a press conference. “Once the snow has actually stopped and the system has moved past the city we then divert our attention to side streets and we clear them.”

The city is also asking residents and business owners to get outside and clear neighborhood sidewalks, storefront sidewalks and fire hydrants.

“We’re in a period of extreme weather right now,” said Gary Schenkel, executive director of the Office of Emergency Management in Chicago.
