Chicago Police Still Accepting Applications, Top Cop Wants 30,000 Of Them

You have just days left to apply to be one of Chicago's finest.

You have just over a week left to get in your application to join the Chicago Police Department and if the city's top cop has it his way there will be plenty of competition for a spot on the force.

In a news conference last week Superintendent Garry McCarthy said that 18,000 applications had been received so far and that he would ideally like to see that climb to 30,000, the Chicago Tribune reported.

A written test will be offered to applicants some time in December and applications will be accepted until Sept. 16. Generally the department only accepts applications every five years.

You can apply online by visiting the department's recruiting site. Application requirements are as follows:

  • Age: 18 years or older
  • Education/Military Service: 60 semester hours or 36 months of continuous active duty or one year continuous service and 30 semester hours. This is required at the time of hire, not application.
  • A valid State of Illinois Driver’s License is required at the time of hire.
  • Payment of application fee of $30, a  fee waiver for available for qualifying individuals.
  • Residency in the City of Chicago is required at time of employment.
The application process includes a POWER test which tests strength, endurance, and flexibility, a background investigation, polygraph, psychological test, medical examination and drug screening.

The department has graduated 512 new officers in 2013 so far.
