New Law Cracks Down On Lost Guns
Cook County passed an ordinance Tuesday afternoon mandating any lost weapons be reported to the Sheriff within two days.
Gun owners who sell, lose, destroy, transfer or have a firearm stolen in the county are now legally required to report it to the Sheriff’s office within 48 hours thanks to a new Cook County ordinance.
The new law, passed Tuesday afternoon, will require firearm owners report the make, model and serial number of the stolen firearm, along with the date and location of purchase.
Individuals who fail to comply will be subject to an initial $1,000 fine, followed by $1,500 for each gun on the second offense and $2,000 for each subsequent violation, according to a press release from the county.
Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle applauded the passage of the ordinance. She says it’s a step in the right direction.
“We are giving law enforcement the additional tools they need to reduce the number of guns purchased legally that are used in shootings,” Preckwinkle said in a press release. “This is part of a comprehensive effort to stop the violence plaguing our neighborhoods.”
The ordinance goes into effect in August 2013.

There are an estimated 280 million guns in this country not counting those owned by law enforcement and military. This makes this new law ridiculous.

That's because the county is run by baboons.

Let's see. You don't know the serial numbers of the firearms that I have now. When they are gone, you would like to know where they went. Ask Eric Holder where his "fast and furious guns" went.

yep. that's gonna work. gangbangers serial number on his 38 special reads "@@#&(^%$" Track that you knucklehead. What a joke. How about this? You commit a crime with a firearm, you get shot by the judge. Next?

Are the police going to cross check serial numbers now at the "gun turn in"programs they hold? I was told the police are just there to accept the weapon and see that it's destroyed. Well if it was stolen shouldn't the owner be notified? They wouldn't do this with anything else, but as long as its a gun they are admonished. All these new laws are directed at the legal gun owner, but the gangbangers could care less. The government wants registration while they are buying millions of rounds for homeland security. When the small arms treaty is passed in March, NATO will stop the importation of ammo to the US. What do you think will come next?

WOW! I don't believe it people commenting on this page that are thinking like me,I really believe people are starting to wake up on whats occurring not only in our county and state but our Federal Government. These gun laws are just directed to the law-abiding citizens.A good way to start is any crime committed with a gun a automatic 10years in prison, any crime committed with a gun were the victim was shot or killed a automatic 25years and up like some have mention.

Does anyone think the bad guy will care at all about this? Mexico allows no guns other than police and solders and the have more killings every year. Bad people have to go to jail and stay there. The Dog and Pony Show we see every week about how many guns are turned in does nothing! Put them in jail if a gun is used in a crime, get good judges on the bench.

Six Sensible Gun Control Laws
First- let’s try actually enforcing ALL the existing laws on the books now. That would but a big dent in illegal guns. No plea bargains on any handgun charges. If they have possession of an illegal handgun charge them for every law they violated. (Underage possession, stolen gun, un-registered gun, no FOID card, concealed, discharged in city limits, add all the years up for ALL the violations and that’s the sentence.
Second- Lock up straw buyers, (2 years in state prison, for each gun sold). No plea bargains. Life in prison on conviction second offence.
Third- Lock up everyone in possession of any illegal gun. (Under age, felon, stolen, non-registered, no FOID card etc.…) two years for EACH gun infraction; 10 years if they are felons or repeat offenders! No plea bargains.
Forth - Add an extra prison sentence for the use of any gun in commission of a crime. If robbery gets you 3 years, add 5 yrs. if you use a gun. If murder gets you 20 years add 5 more if you committed the crime with a gun. Plus extra time for any other gun laws violated. (See above)
Fifth- no parole, or time off sentence for any gun charges. They have to serve the entire sentence, the total of all infractions. (see above)
Sixth- Mandatory issuing of concealed carry permits to law abiding people who pass training classes and background checks.
