Little Company of Mary Hospital: Birthing Center Achieves 'Baby-Friendly' Distinction
Evergreen Park-based hospital first in Chicago area to achieve prestigious designation through breastfeeding program.
Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park was recognized as a Baby-Friendly birth facility by Baby-Friendly USA, for the warm and loving environment the hospital provides to newborns and their families.
There are 150 Baby-Friendly hospitals and birth centers in the United States and 20,000 worldwide. Little Company of Mary Hospital is the third Baby-Friendly hospital and birth center in Illinois and the first in the Chicago area to achieve the prestigious designation, a hospital news release said.
The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative is a global program that was started by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the UNICEFF in 1991 to encourage and recognize hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for infant feed and mother/baby bonding.
To achieve the Baby-Friendly designation, Little Company of Mary went through a comprehensive, detailed and thorough audit. The hospital was challenged to examine and modify longstanding policies and procedures, implementing a program to encourage breastfeeding by new mothers.
The Baby-Friendly designation recognizes and awards birthing facilities that successful implement the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding and the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes .
Little Company of Mary Hospital offers comprehensive education and a variety of programs to mothers throughout the phases of pregnancy, childbirth and post-partum.
