Alsip, IL February 4, 2013: Four Alsip residents recently came to Sertoma Centre, Inc. to volunteer their time working with individuals with disabilities.  The family of four arrived in the morning at the Sertoma Centre’s facility at 4343 W. 123 Street in Alsip to assist in the Developmental Training Program where individuals were working on a packaging project for an environmental testing organization.

Before moving to Alsip, Tosha Smith lived in London, England where her three daughters were born. Daughters, Dinah, Cherith and Halle are honor students at an upper grade school in Alsip.  Each of the three girls has a variety of interests and talents including music, drama, band, math, basketball and student council, to name a few.

Smith has instilled in her daughters that volunteering and giving back should always be part of who they are.  As a volunteer for most of her life, she felt the girls would benefit from working with individuals with disabilities.  Smith said she believes this opportunity would help teach her young daughters that we are all people who deserve respect. 

The family learned about volunteering at Sertoma Centre while they were visiting the Alsip Library where they received a list of volunteer opportunities called “Helping Hands.” The experience was a positive one for this family and the individuals with disabilities.

 “We enjoyed the opportunity to work with the individuals with disabilities at Sertoma Centre, where everyone is accepted for who they are and treated with respect,” stated Smith.
